I operate my monitor in a darker working environment to assist in correcting colour correcting images, and have my brightness set to 38 and contrast set to 72. I use the same settings for all work.

The Pantone Spyder2 colorimeter I use to calibrate the screen has some greyscale test charts as part of its calibration process, and I use them to adjust the brightness and contrast and make sure I had the widest greyscale range with minimum saturation of whites and blacks.

I recalibrate my screen monthly, and have also noticed that the individual RGB colours are slowly changing over time as the screen ages. The spyder2 has a RGB colour level check as part of the process, and I use this test along with manual RGB adjustment to make sure each colour level is inside the target range required. e.g my current settings are:- Red 48, Green 40, Blue 50.

Having calibrated my monitor, I do not want the monitor changing any settings itself, so use the following other settings:- MagicColor:OFF
Gamma: Mode1
ColorEffect: OFF
ColorTone: Custom

I am replying to your comments regarding your calibration of a Samsung 2243BWX monitor. I have just purchased one for the same reason as yourself ie other monitors are too expensive for my current photographic needs. Can you tell me what adjustments you made to the monitor to bring it up to final calibration (ie RGB changes etc etc). Do you only use these settings for photographic work and then return to the default settings for other work?
